Five minutes is all you need for this DIY facial
One of the benefits of Covid restrictions is learning how to pamper ourselves at home, empowering us to take the reigns on self-care! Follow these steps for a quick facial, which is fuss-free enough to become a regular treat when your complexion is crying out for a little TLC. Set the scene by draping on a bathrobe, lighting candles or an essential oil diffuser, and playing soothing music, to transform boudoir into private beauty sanctuary.
1. Double Cleanse It’s best to start with a clean slate, so remove any make-up or dead skin cells with an oil-based cleanser. Massage the whole face, paying special attention to the T-zone before rinsing with warm water. Follow with your regular cleanser, being mindful of cleansing from the neck and chin in upwards, outwards motions before washing off a second time with warm water. Clay-based or gel cleansers work well for oily skin, while milky, creamy cleansers offer extra hydration for dry skin types.
2. Exfoliate Now your skin is clean, it’s time to slough away dead skin cells to ensure that any product applied afterwards absorbs well. Again it’s important to choose the right exfoliant for your skin type, whether it’s a physical or chemical one. Those who favour a liquid formula can swipe over the face with a cotton pad, or if opting for a scrub, dilute with water to form a paste which can be massaged from the neck all the way up to the forehead, being mindful to avoid the delicate eye area.
3. Apply a mask Your skin is now in perfect condition to soak in all the goodness of a mask. Have fun playing with a few different masks applied to different parts of the face for a customised treatment. If you have combination skin for example, using a clay-based mask on the T-zone will help draw out impurities, while a formula packed with hyaluronic acid is best suited for dryness and fine lines around the lips and eyes. Finally, treat the cheek area to a mask formulated with peptides and antioxidants. Leave on for 10 to 15 minuets and wipe off gently with a face cloth.
4. Moisturise After a spritz of a hydrating toner, seal in the benefits of the previous steps by layering your favourite serum, moisturiser and eye cream (preferably working from thinnest to thickest formula) on lovingly. Gently work the product in either with your fingers or even a gua sha tool. Start at the chin work outwards, following a similar pattern on neglected areas of the face like around the nostrils, the middle of the forehead and behind the ears. If performing the facial in the day, finish with SPF and primer. Otherwise, simply slide straight into your PJs, sink into bed and drift off…
